Chopicallqui Summit 6354m

Climb one of the highest mountains in Peru after acclimatizing on Pisco Mountain. Two world class climbs in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca.

Cordillera Blanca Classic Climbs is an exciting, well-balanced itinerary combining ascents of two beautiful and popular peaks: Pisco 5752m and Chopicalqui 6354m.

The expedition is particularly suitable for those who have done alpine routes before. We highly recommend to allow yourself enough time to acclimate to the altitude. We warm up on Pisco and our main climbing objective is Chopicalqui which provides an excellent snow climb with the most challenging summit day. The most difficult section involves at least three to four rope length of 50° to 65° snow/ice climbing at an altitude of over 6000m. Conditions on the mountains in 2022 were excellent, with most teams summiting on all the peaks included in this itinerary.

CLIMBING ITINERARY

Lets Go! Vamos!

You are picked up at your accommodation and begin the journey with a spectacular scenic drive along the Callejon de Huaylas Valley and then into the Huascaran National Park, past the turquoise Llanganuco Lakes to Cebollapampa 3900m (2½ hours drive). Here our gear is loaded onto the donkeys and we climb on a good path for 3 hours to Pisco Base Camp 4700m (Pisco Mountain Hut).

Summit Day. We leave very early. The ground is uneven and rocky, and the hike commences with a steep but short hike up to the top of the moraine wall and then a short but tricky descent down the other side. The rest of the way is a mixture of good path with some demanding climbing over moraine rocks and loose ground until we reach the glacier where we put on crampons and rope up (3 hours hike).  Most of the way is not very steep or technically difficult although the altitude does make it a challenge. Depending on the season, there can be some short steep sections or hard ice or possibly a crevasse to navigate around. We try to arrive on the summit to see the sunrise. About 5 hours to the broad summit where there is plenty of room to walk around, appreciate the amazing surrounding mountains and take photos.

Nevado Pisco Climbing

From the summit we enjoy panoramic views of the highest mountains in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca Range,  Huascarán (6768m) highest tropical mountain in the world, Chopicalqui (6354m), Huandoy (6160m), Pirámide (5885m), Artesonraju (6025m). We descend the same route back to Base Camp. 12 hours activity.

Walk down to Cebollapampa for 1½ hours and from there we hike up for another 3 hours to Chopicalqui Base Camp at 4250m.

Day 4: Base Camp – Moraine Camp

Climb up to the moraine camp at 4900. 5 hours hike.

Ascend to High Camp 5400m. 4 hours climb.

Summit attempt and back to moraine camp. 12 hours climb for the day.

Walk down to Curva and return to Huaraz. 4 hours walk.

Health and Fitness
To get the most out of your climbing experience with us, you will need to be fit, healthy and well acclimatized to the altitude. You do not need to be an athlete, but a good level of overall fitness is important. As an indication, you should be able to walk for up to 12 hours with a heavy backpack.
